Helmet requirement for skiing & tobogganing in Lower Austria

Safe on the slopes

Who exactly does the rule apply to?

  • Children & Youth up to age 15: Helmet is mandatory
  • Tobogganing: The obligation applies just as on the ski slope.

Ski, snowboard, skibob, and other winter sports equipment are also included.

Is the helmet requirement being checked?

Our staff may revoke the ticket and/or remove the individuals from the premises if the helmet requirement is disregarded.
The helmet requirement must be taken seriously – not least because in the event of an accident insurances may reduce or cancel benefits, if a mandatory helmet was not worn. In the event of an accident, parents are liable for their children or may be charged with breach of supervisory duty.

Most importantly, however, parents have the duty of supervision and ensure that their children are well protected on the road.

How to find the right helmet for your child

A good helmet doesn't have to be expensive – it has to fit. When buying, pay attention to:

  • Standardized
  • Comfortable, secure fit (it should not wobble or press)
  • Exchange after 3–5 years or after a fall
  • No thick cap underneath (better a thin balaclava)

This keeps the helmet comfortable to wear – and reliably protective.

Whether skiing or tobogganing: A helmet is simply part of it today.
